But if you want to play, there are some rules. That's just the way it is. But first, let's start with the basics.
Why?
Excellent question. Why convert your URL? The answer is simple; some URLs are just too long. If you want to use them in an e-mail, or cool services like Twitter; that isn't handy. So make 'em smart!
Let's have an example. I want to send this URL to a friend. Or write about it in Twitter:
Hmmm... that is quite tricky. It is long; it could break in your e-mail and it may just not fit. And then; my friend needs to copy and paste all that.
How about this:
That is much better! Or we could even do this:
So that's why: it will make your life easier. And it is free! It doesn't get any better than that.
Pick your own keyword.
Sure! Why not. Just make sure you use only alphanumeric characters. This means: just plain letters (a-z) and numbers; no spaces. Ow, and yes, a key IS case sensitive.
Play nice.
To play, we do have some rules.
We would like this service to be for everybody. So we want SMURLS to be safe. We did some things what will help:
- We use surbl.org to check all submitted urls to protect against spammers and phishers.
- We have some (very basic) filters against adult sites. It is NOT allowed to use a SMURL for your adult site; that is not what SMURLS are for. If reported; we will remove the SMULR pointing to an adult site. Or any other illegal, spamming, phising or racism site. As said; we would like SMURLS to be for everybody (= all ages).
- The submitted url should be an actual, existing and working website. We do check this before creating a SMURL.
